Choosing the Right Safari Destination

Africa is vast and diverse, offering a plethora of safari destinations, each with its own unique charm, wildlife, landscapes, cultures, and people.

Popular African Safari Destinations

We have compiled a short list of, what we consider to be, the best African destinations for wildlife and amazing experiences for your first safari.

For a more exclusive experience, Botswana's Okavango Delta offers unique water-based safaris. The Chobe National Park, known for its large elephant herds, provides excellent game viewing. The Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta offers diverse ecosystems, from lush waterways to dry savannahs.

Known for its stunning deserts and diverse wildlife, Namibia offers a different yet equally captivating safari experience. The towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the rugged landscapes of Damaraland, and the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park are highlights. Namibia's stark beauty and unique wildlife make it a photographer's paradise.

Madagascar's uniqueness lies in its endemic species and diverse ecosystems. The island is home to lemurs, chameleons, and an array of exotic plants. National parks like Andasibe-Mantadia and Ranomafana offer lush rainforests, while the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park showcases sharp limestone formations and unique wildlife. Madagascar's blend of nature and adventure promises an unforgettable safari experience.

Tanzania

Home to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania is perfect for witnessing large herds of animals and dramatic, picturesque landscapes. The Serengeti is renowned for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras traverse its plains. The Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano, offers a unique ecosystem teeming with wildlife too.

Known for the mighty Victoria Falls and the abundant wildlife of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe offers a mix of dramatic landscapes and rich wildlife, including the Big 5. Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is breathtakingly beautiful, famed for its walking safaris and canoeing on the Zambezi River, providing an intimate wildlife experience. It is actually my favourite safari destination due to its uniqueness and absolute beauty.

Best Time to Go on Your First Safari

Timing is crucial for maximizing your first safari experience.

  • High Season (Dry Season): Generally, from June to October, the dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. However, this is also the busiest and most expensive time.

  • Low Season (Wet Season): From November to March, the wet season brings lush landscapes and newborn animals. It’s less crowded and cheaper but harder to spot animals due to the dense vegetation.

  • Shoulder Seasons: April to May and October to November offer a balance between good weather, wildlife sightings, and fewer tourists. When we visit Botswana during the shoulder season, the mix of abundant wildlife and serene landscapes made it a perfect trip.

Choosing a Safari Tour Operator for Your First Safari

The right tour operator can make or break your safari, and our advice is to do your research and ask as many questions as you can think of. Any great safari operator will already have an FAQ and/or welcome all the questions you may have.

Key Criteria for Choosing Your First Safari Operator

  • Experience and Expertise: Look for operators with extensive experience and positive reviews. They should offer knowledgeable guides who can enhance your safari with their insights. They should also be local and have experienced the places they list as in the packages being offered.

  • Safety Standards: Ensure the operator adheres to high safety standards, including well-maintained vehicles and trained staff.

  • Ethical Practices: Choose operators committed to conservation and responsible tourism.

  • Customization: Opt for operators who offer customizable packages to suit your preferences and budget. When choosing a tour operator, I always check reviews on platforms like Google, TripAdvisor, and seek recommendations from fellow travelers if you know any who have been on an African safari before.

Safari Accommodations: From Luxury Lodges to Camping

Your accommodation can significantly impact your safari experience.

Types of Accommodations Suitable for Your First Safari

  • Luxury Lodges: These offer top-notch comfort, gourmet meals, and stunning views. Ideal for those wanting a hassle-free experience.

  • Tented Camps: Providing a blend of comfort and adventure, tented camps are often located in prime wildlife areas.

  • Budget Campsites: Perfect for those who enjoy a more rustic experience and want to save on costs. All the safaris we offer have a portion of the itinerary staying in tented camps. There is nothing quite like falling asleep to the sounds of the wild. We highly recommend you experience this.

Packing Essentials for Your Safari

Packing the right items can make your safari more comfortable and enjoyable.

We have written an article on just this topic.

For a more detailed packing list, check out our blog post "The Ultimate African Safari Packing List: What You Really Need to Know Before You Go!".

We have summarized a few areas below to consider.

  • Clothing: Neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunglasses, a light jacket for cool mornings, and comfortable walking shoes.

  • Toiletries: Sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal hygiene items.

  • Medical Supplies: Basic first aid kit, any prescription medications, and over-the-counter remedies.

  • Safari Gear: Binoculars, camera with extra batteries and memory cards, and a good quality water bottle. We had a client forget their binoculars on a trip to Hwange National Park once. Luckily we had a spare they were able to borrow, it made a big difference in their ability to enjoy the wildlife up close. Don't make the same mistake!

Health and Safety on Your First Safari

Your health and safety are paramount during your safari adventure.

  • Vaccinations: Check which vaccinations are required or recommended for the regions you'll be visiting.

  • Malaria Prevention: Take anti-malarial medication and use insect repellent and mosquito nets. Safety Tips for Your First Safari

  • Respect Wildlife: Always follow your guide's instructions and maintain a safe distance from animals.

  • Stay Within Designated Areas: Do not venture out on your own, especially in unfenced areas.

  • Listen To Your Guides: Ensure you listen to your professional guides and follow their instructions at all times, their main priority is to keep you safe. We regularly have inquisitive wildlife, such as elephants that come very close to our vehicles and camps. Thanks to our professional guide’s calm demeanour and experience, we had an incredible and safe encounter.

Safari Etiquette: Dos and Don'ts

Respect for wildlife, fellow travellers, your guides, and local communities is crucial.

Wildlife Viewing for Your First Safari

  • Keep Quiet: Speak in hushed tones to avoid startling the animals.

  • Do Not Feed the Animals: Feeding wildlife disrupts their natural behaviours and can be dangerous. It is also against park rules and can result in personal injury and fines. Interacting with Guides and Fellow Travelers on Your First Safari

  • Be Punctual: Respect the schedule to ensure everyone gets the most out of the safari.

  • Ask Questions: Guides appreciate engaged travellers who show interest in learning. They are full of knowledge, and you’d be surprised at the information they have gained over the many years in their profession. On a group safari in Botswana, our guide’s unbelievable stories and knowledge significantly enriched our clients' experience. Engaging with them can add great value to your trip.

What to Expect on Your First Safari

Understanding what a typical safari day looks like can help set your expectations and ultimately prepare for a more rewarding safari.

Daily Schedule for Your Safari

  • Early Morning Game Drives: The best time for wildlife sightings as animals are most active.

  • Midday Rest: Return to the camp or lodge for meals and relaxation.

  • Afternoon Game Drives: Another opportunity to spot wildlife before sunset.

  • Evening Relaxation: Share stories around the campfire or enjoy a peaceful evening under the stars. During most safaris, the early mornings are challenging as you are on holiday and want to sleep in, but getting up early almost always is incredibly rewarding with what you see and experience. The sight of an African sunrise or a leopard is worth the early wake-up call.

Budgeting for Your First Safari Adventure

Proper budgeting ensures you can enjoy your safari without financial stress.

Breakdown of Costs for Your Safari

  • Flights: Can be the most significant expense, so book in advance for the best deals.

  • Accommodations: Range from budget to luxury, affecting your overall cost.

  • Safari Packages: Include game drives, meals, and sometimes flights. Compare packages to find the best value. Again, ask questions if the package is confusing or doesn’t list what’s included and excluded.

  • Extras: Tips, souvenirs, and additional activities. When planning my personal safaris, I always set aside a little extra for unexpected costs. This has saved me from any financial hiccups on more than one occasion.

Making the Most of Your First Safari Experience

To truly enjoy your safari, immerse yourself in the experience wholeheartedly.

Maximizing Wildlife Sightings on Your Safari

  • Be Patient: Wildlife can be unpredictable, so patience and persistence are key.

  • Use Binoculars: They help you see animals that are far away without disturbing them.

  • Ask Your Guide: They know the best spots and times for sightings.

  • Support Local Projects: Visit community projects and learn about local conservation efforts.

  • Respect Cultural Practices: Show respect and interest in local traditions and customs. On one safari, we visited a local Zimbabwean village. The experience of learning about their culture and way of life was as enriching as the wildlife encounters.

Family and Special Interest Safaris

Family Safaris for First-Timers If you're traveling with young children, consider which destinations and activities might be better suited for young families. Most safari operators will list any restriction with certain age groups on their packages. These areas offer a safe environment for children with plenty of engaging activities.

Special Interest Safaris for Your First Trip

For those with specific interests like photography, birdwatching, or conservation, many safari operators offer specialised tours. Whether you're an avid photographer looking to capture stunning wildlife shots or a birdwatcher eager to see rare species, there's a safari tailored to your passion.

  • Photo Safaris: For photography enthusiasts, photo safaris offer the perfect opportunity to capture stunning wildlife shots. All of our guides are highly knowledgeable about photography and can position you for the best lighting and angles.

  • Walking Safaris: For a more immersive experience, walking safaris allow you to explore the wilderness on foot. Accompanied by experienced and professional guides, you'll learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem and track wildlife up close.

  • Birding Safaris: Africa is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 2,000 species across the continent. Birding safaris focus on spotting and identifying various bird species, often in diverse habitats from wetlands to forests.

Conclusion

Your first African safari will be an adventure of a lifetime. With the right preparation and mindset, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
