Victoria Falls stands as one of the esteemed Seven Natural Wonders of the World and holds the prestigious title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and rightfully so. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya – The Smoke that Thunders, this breathtaking marvel straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was first encountered by the renowned explorer David Livingstone in the late 1855, who promptly dedicated it to his sovereign of the time, Queen Victoria.

While not claiming the title of the largest waterfall globally, Victoria Falls boasts the largest curtain of cascading water, particularly impressive during its peak in April and May. At this time, the thunderous roar of the falls crescendos as floodwaters from the upper Zambezi and Chobe rivers converge, charting their course toward the Mozambique Channel and ultimately, the Indian Ocean.

The Victoria Falls spans a width of 1,342 meters (4,090 ft) and plunges down a height of 108 meters (354 ft) into the Batoka Gorge, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The spray from the falls rises high into the air, often forming rainbows that shimmer in the sunlight. The surrounding area is home to lush rainforest, teeming with diverse wildlife.

The best time to visit Victoria Falls for photography is during the dry season, which falls between April and November. During this time, the water levels are lower, and there is less spray, making it easier to capture clear shots of the falls.

If you're planning a helicopter tour, be sure to book a window seat for unobstructed views of the falls.

Victoria Falls is a photographer's dream, offering endless opportunities to capture breathtaking images. With its dramatic scenery, diverse wildlife, and awe-inspiring power, Victoria Falls is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Photographic Highlights

Exploring Victoria Falls by Foot:

Embark on an unforgettable journey along the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls, where a picturesque footpath stretches along its entire length, offering unparalleled vistas of the cascading waters. Experience the awe-inspiring sight of the water plunging towards you, often accompanied by the enchanting presence of a rainbow amidst the mist—a photographer's dream composition.

It's crucial to consider that while the peak flow occurs in April and May, the sheer force of the water can create a thunderous roar and dense spray, obstructing the full view of the falls. Even the most weather-sealed cameras may struggle amidst the mist. We highly recommend bringing a waterproof bag to shield your equipment during the mistiest segments of the journey.

Under the glow of a full moon, and under favourable conditions, Victoria Falls unveils its beauty on select evenings, offering photographers a rare opportunity to capture the ethereal phenomenon known as a "moonbow" amidst the mist.

Exploring from the Zambian Side:

Witness Victoria Falls from a distinct perspective on the Zambian side, where the water descends away from your vantage point. Enjoy the advantage of a closer proximity to the falls, providing unparalleled photographic opportunities as the water cascades into the gorge below. For an extraordinary experience, consider indulging in a lunch or high tea on Livingstone Island, offering a unique perspective. However, please note that this option may not be available during periods of full flood.
