Hey there! Did you know Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is our new home base for your next Zimbabwe safari? It’s where the magic happens, offering perfect spots for capturing stunning photographs on your African safari.

In Botswana, we love exploring Chobe National Park and cruising along the Chobe River. These iconic locations form the heart of our Botswana safari, providing a vibrant and enriching photographic safari adventure. You’ll find a plethora of wildlife and breathtaking riverine landscapes to capture with your lens. Just a short trip from Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park is another gem in our Zimbabwe safari itinerary. Known for its large elephant herds and diverse ecosystems, Hwange offers unique photo opportunities in their natural habitat.

Shifting focus to the stark beauty of Namibia, our Namibian safaris bring you to the incredible landscapes of Etosha National Park and the charming coastal town of Swakopmund. Etosha is renowned for its salt pans and vibrant wildlife, offering a different palette of photo opportunities, from majestic lions to towering giraffes. Meanwhile, Swakopmund provides a picturesque blend of adventure and history, perfect for those looking to capture both the natural and architectural beauty of Namibia.

Back in Zimbabwe, the awe-inspiring views of Victoria Falls make it a fantastic starting point for our adventures. Further enhancing our Zimbabwe safari offerings, Mana Pools is another favorite spot, ideal for those looking to capture truly wild scenes.

Discover the Magic of African Safaris

What is a Classic Safari?

A classic safari is your ticket to many fantastic destinations in Africa’s wild landscapes, where the adventure feels like stepping into a nature documentary. It’s a chance to get up close with some of the world’s most iconic wildlife, like lions, elephants, and giraffes, in their natural settings.

Typically help in game reserves and national parks, such as the Mana Pools in Zimbabwe or Kruger National Park in South Africa, classic safaris are often characterised by game drives in open vehicles, guided nature walks, and even river safaris in canoes. These adventures provide ample opportunities for wildlife photography and bird watching, making them a top choice for nature enthusiasts.

While the classic safari originated in Africa, the concept has broadened to include wildlife and scenic expeditions in other parts of the world, like tiger safaris in India, jaguar sightings in Brazil or the exploration of the Artic.

But there’s something truly special about and African experience - with its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural richness, it promises an unforgettable adventure that feels both thrilling and deeply personal.

What is a Photographic Safari?

A photographic safari is a specialised type of African safari designed for wildlife photography enthusiasts. Driven by the accessibility of camera gear and the rise of digital wildlife photography, photo safaris offer a unique experience. On a photo safari, you'll find fewer people on safari vehicles or boats, allowing for a more intimate experience.

Typically, you’ll be accompanied by a professional wildlife photographer who will help you enhance your wildlife photography skills and knowledge.

Some photographic safaris provide camera equipment if you don't have your own. Unlike standard African safaris, you'll be surrounded by fellow wildlife photography enthusiasts, ensuring you can take your time capturing the perfect shot without feeling rushed.

Our Group Sizes on Safaris and Photographic Tours?

Our safaris and photographic tours typically accommodate groups in multiples of two. For instance, our custom-built photo boats on the Chobe River can hold up to eight people, while our safari vehicles in the Okavango Delta can take four to eight passengers. In group photo safaris covering multiple destinations, we limit the group size to eight to ten guests per photographic safari host. This ensures you receive ample attention and tuition while maintaining affordability.

If you prefer a private safari or photographic safari with a group of fewer than eight participants, we can arrange a custom itinerary tailored to your needs.

Are Photographic Safaris Suitable for Beginners?

Absolutely! Many of our clients are new to wildlife photography. Spending time with a professional wildlife photography guide in the African bush, the world's best classroom, will quickly elevate your skills. We also cater to experienced photographers who can further refine their techniques while enjoying the company of like-minded enthusiasts. For beginners, we recommend checking out our article on photography safaris for beginners and visiting our YouTube channel for more tutorials.

Do You Offer Editing Courses on Photographic Safaris?

Yes, our photographic safaris include editing sessions between game drives and activities, should you require some help. These group sessions focus on image reviews rather than in-depth editing tutorials. We recommend completing one of our free online Adobe Lightroom course for beginners before your safari to maximize these sessions. Ensure your editing software is up-to-date and compatible with your camera, as internet bandwidth on safari is limited.

Can Non-Photographers Join Photographic Safaris?

Non-photographers are welcome on all our photo tours. Regardless of whether you have camera equipment, the wildlife experience remains paramount on our safaris. We can provide a camera and lens for non-photographers on most occasions, however we require some notice to ensure we have the right amount of gear to ensure we can meet the demand. Many non-photographers quickly develop an interest in photography and start exploring options for their own gear, and we can provide links to our affiliate stores to help you save some money on your purchases.

Cost of a Safaris and Photographic Tours in Africa?

The cost of a classic safari and photographic safari depends on the travel dates, destinations, and desired level of luxury and experiences. We prioritise the wildlife experience and balance this with luxury amenities.

Our safari lodges and camps offer extremely comfortable accommodations, hot water, delicious chef cooked meals, and abundant wildlife opportunities.

To make our photo tours more accessible, we strive to minimize single supplement costs for solo travellers. However, during peak seasons (June to October), this might be unavoidable due to the limited capacity of our partner camps.

Will There be Professional Photographers on Every Photographic Safari?

Our photographic safaris are guided by some of the best professional wildlife photographers. They will assist you in improving your photography skills throughout your stay with us. Spending a few days with our expert photo hosts in one of our top destinations will boost your confidence and skills immensely, preparing you for future adventures.

Best Time for a Safari?

Africa offers fantastic safari opportunities year-round. Your travel timing should align with what you want to see and experience. For example, to photograph baby animals, plan your trip just after the rains at the end of the year. For birding, January to March is ideal when migratory species are present.

While the dry season (April to October) is popular and more expensive due to higher demand, traveling outside these months can offer better value and excellent wildlife photography opportunities. For more details, see our destinations pages for country specific information.

Gear Rental for Photographic Safaris?

We can offer different levels of DSLR and mirrorless bodies like the Canon 90D and Canon 7D Mk II, Canon R5, along with lenses such as the Canon RF 100-500mm and Sigma 150-600mm.

If you are interested in renting out some of our gear, please contact us and let us know what you require.

Tripods & Beanbags on Photographic Safaris?

Tripods are rarely necessary on our photographic safaris and often not worth the extra baggage allowance. Our open vehicles are equipped with bean bags which you may use at no additional cost.
